Real-World Use Information
Whether assembling light target loads for skeet and sporting clays or packing heavy magnum turkey and waterfowl shells, Federal 209A Primers ensure consistent flame propagation and complete powder combustion. Their precise outer diameter seats firmly into hull primer pockets across popular hulls like Winchester AA, Remington STS, and Federal Gold Medal. Utilizing automated press equipment or progressive shotshell loaders (MEC, RCBS, Hornady), these primers slide cleanly through feed tubes to maximize reloading efficiency.
Compatibility & Requirements
-
Hull Compatibility: Fits all standard 209-size shotshell primer pocket hulls (Federal Gold Medal, Winchester AA, Remington STS, Cheddite, Fiocchi).
-
Equipment Compatibility: Seats cleanly in all standard shotshell reloading presses (MEC 600 Jr, MEC 9000, RCBS Mini-Grand, Hornady 366, Dillon SL900).
-
Safety Requirement: Always wear protective eyewear during handling, store primers in a cool, dry location away from heat sources, and strictly adhere to published shotshell reloading recipe data.
Pros & Limitations
Pros:
-
Hot Thermal Flash: Highly potent flame output guarantees complete ignition of dense, hard-to-ignite shotshell powders.
-
All-Weather Reliability: Formulated to detonate reliably under freezing conditions during cold-weather duck and goose hunts.
-
Clean-Burning Chemistry: Leaves minimal residue in hull basewads and shotgun action ports.
-
Tight Pocket Seal: Uniform cup size fits firmly to prevent gas leakage around hull primer pockets.
Limitations:
-
Higher Flame Heat Output: Requires using exact load recipes for Federal 209A primers; substituting 209A into recipes tested for cooler primers (such as Winchester 209) can cause significant pressure increases.
-
Shotshell Only: Designed strictly for shotshell hull pockets; not compatible with metallic rifle or pistol cases.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Are Federal 209A primers hotter than Winchester 209 primers?
A: Yes, Federal 209A primers deliver a hotter, longer flame blast than standard Winchester 209 primers. Always consult a shotshell reloading manual before interchanging 209 primer brands.
Q: Can I use Federal 209A primers in 12 gauge and 20 gauge target loads?
A: Yes, Federal #209A primers are widely used in 12 gauge, 16 gauge, 20 gauge, 28 gauge, and .410 bore target and field loads according to tested published data.
Q: Are Federal 209A shotshell primers non-corrosive?
A: Yes, they feature a modern, non-corrosive and non-mercuric priming formula that protects barrel bores, chokes, and receiver actions from corrosion.

Since everyone is hoarding everything under the sun, percussion caps are no exception. I’ve been forced to convert all my muzzleloaders to 209 ignition. I’ve tried them all and these are the only ones that don’t stick in the nipples. They burn clean, fast and hot!!! They don’t gunk up the gun either. Sure fire every time!!!
