Winchester WSF Smokeless Gun Powder
Clear Product Overview
Winchester WSF (Winchester Super Field) Smokeless Gun Powder is a versatile, medium-burn-rate double-base spherical (Ball Powder®) propellant. Engineered by Winchester and distributed by Hodgdon, WSF was designed to deliver exceptional multi-caliber versatility, smooth volumetric drop consistency, and clean combustion across popular handgun cartridges and 12-gauge/20-gauge shotshell loadings.
First, WSF features a fine, double-base spherical grain geometry that meters with sub-grain accuracy through progressive reloading powder measures and shotshell charge bars. Consequently, handloaders achieve consistent charge weights and extremely low velocity standard deviations. In addition, its medium-fast burn profile generates stable, smooth pressure curves ideal for full-velocity service handgun rounds and field target shotgun shells. As a result, it is a premier choice for action pistol competitors and recreational shooters loading 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, .38 Super, as well as 20-gauge shotshells and heavy 12-gauge target/hunting loads. Furthermore, its clean-burning formulation reduces fouling inside semi-automatic slide rails, port openings, and shotgun bores. Therefore, it delivers clean operational performance, soft felt recoil, and shot-after-shot reliability.

Real-World Use Information
Handloaders select Winchester WSF because it is widely regarded as one of the ultimate, soft-shooting propellants for 9mm Luger and .40 S&W competition ammunition. Consequently, USPSA and IDPA competitors achieve full power factor thresholds while maintaining flat muzzle control and clean slide cycling.
Additionally, its dense spherical grain size drops with pinpoint precision through progressive press powder drops. Therefore, high-volume action shooters spend less time checking charge variations and more time assembling match-grade pistol ammunition. Furthermore, it serves double-duty on reloading benches for clay target and upland hunters reloading 20-gauge shotshells.
Compatibility & Requirements
-
Application Use: Performs exceptionally in 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and 20-gauge shotshells; ideal for target, competition, and medium-pressure field charges.
-
Load Data: Always consult current official Hodgdon/Winchester reloading tables prior to charging cases or shotshells.
-
Storage: Store powder in its original sealed container in a cool, dry area away from direct heat sources and open flames.
Pros & Limitations
Pros:
-
Premier 9mm & .40 S&W Propellant: Revered for delivering smooth impulse curves and clean combustion in popular action pistol calibers.
-
Flawless Volumetric Flow: Spherical grain structure drops with high precision through progressive press measures and charge bars.
-
Dual Handgun & Shotshell Utility: Versatile application range spanning handgun loading and 20-gauge / 12-gauge shotshell reloading.
-
Clean Burning Chemistry: Reduces carbon accumulation on slide rails, compensators, and shotgun choke tubes.
Limitations:
-
Not for Full-Power Magnums: Medium burn rate is optimized for standard service pistol rounds; slower powders are required for magnum revolver loads like .44 Mag.
-
Double-Base Thermal Profile: Generates slightly more barrel heat during continuous rapid-fire strings relative to pure single-base target powders.

John From Albany, OR –
I found some WSF today. I was very thankful for a power that says it’s good for pistol shells as well as shotgun. I’ve been having a hard time finding a power for 44 Magnum and was hoping to use this. I see where others have used it for 44 Mag. Where can I find some reloading data?
