Real-World Use Information

Formulated for high pellet counts and consistent pattern fields, Federal Top Gun 12 Gauge 1-1/8 oz #8 Shot provides excellent coverage for close to medium-range clay target disciplines. The 1-1/8 oz load maximizes the number of lead pellets in flight (approx. 460 pellets per shell), minimizing holes in your pattern on fast-moving skeet and trap targets. Clean-burning powders help keep internal gas systems, receiver tracks, and trigger assemblies clear of excess residue during long multi-box tournament sessions.

Compatibility & Requirements

• Firearm Compatibility: Safe for all modern 12-gauge shotguns chambered for 2.75-inch (2-3/4″), 3-inch, or 3.5-inch shells.

• Choke Compatibility: Performs exceptionally well through standard Target, Skeet, Improved Cylinder, and Light Modified choke tubes.

• Safety Requirement: Always wear certified shooting glasses and ear protection when at the range or trap field.

Pros & Limitations

Pros:

• High Pellet Density: 1-1/8 oz payload of #8 shot offers dense pattern spread for high hit probability.

• Hard Lead Composition: Minimizes pellet deformation in the barrel for consistent downrange patterning.

• Reliable Action Cycling: Produces clean energy to reliably cycle pump-action, over/under, and semi-automatic shotguns.

• Budget-Friendly Performance: High-value target ammunition perfect for weekly league shooting and practice rounds.

Limitations:

• Lead Construction: Not allowed in non-toxic waterfowl hunting zones or lead-restricted shooting ranges.

• Slightly Higher Recoil Than 1 oz: Heavy 1-1/8 oz payload produces slightly more felt recoil than lighter 1 oz target options.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Is #8 lead shot good for trap shooting?

A: Yes! #8 shot is extremely popular for 16-yard singles trap and skeet because it offers a higher total pellet count than #7.5 shot, providing dense pattern coverage on close and medium-range targets.

Q: Will Federal Top Gun 1-1/8 oz loads cycle in semi-automatic shotguns?

A: Yes. The standard 1,200 FPS velocity paired with the 1-1/8 oz payload generates plenty of pressure to cycle inertia-driven and gas-operated semi-automatic shotguns reliably.

Q: What is the difference between #7.5 and #8 target shot?

A: #8 shot pellets are slightly smaller in diameter than #7.5 pellets, meaning a box of #8 shot contains more individual pellets for denser patterns, whereas #7.5 shot carries slightly more energy for longer distances.
