Real-World Use Information
Competitive 3-Gun shooters, High Power service rifle competitors, and precision AR handloaders choose federal premium gold medal ar match grade small rifle primers gm205mar to resolve unique semi-automatic loading challenges. Because floating firing pins in military-style rifles tap the primer face during cycling, standard commercial small rifle primers risk unintentional slam-fires or cratering under high pressure. The #GM205MAR features a heavy-duty cup designed to safely withstand floating pin contact and high pressure spikes while delivering micro-gram uniformity in chemical payload for sub-MOA precision downrange.
Compatibility & Requirements
-
Cartridge Compatibility: Ideal for high-pressure, high-capacity small rifle cartridges including .223 Remington, 5.56mm NATO, 6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC, 22 Nosler, and 300 Blackout.
-
Firearm Compatibility: Engineered specifically for AR-15, M4, M16, and semi-automatic sporting rifles. Also works exceptional well in bolt-action rifles where tough primer cups are preferred.
-
Tool Compatibility: Fits all standard hand-held, bench-mounted, and progressive reloading presses and priming tools.
Pros & Limitations
Pros:
-
Slam-Fire Resistant: Tougher primer cup prevents floating firing pin detonation during high-speed action cycling.
-
Match-Grade Accuracy: Gold Medal manufacturing standards minimize extreme velocity spreads (ES) and standard deviation (SD).
-
High-Pressure Performance: Prevents primer piercing and cratering in hot 5.56 NATO and 6.5 Grendel handloads.
-
Non-Corrosive Formula: Safeguards gas tubes, bolt carrier groups, and barrels against chemical rust and pitting.
Limitations:
-
Firing Pin Weight Requirements: Requires standard or military-weight firing pin strikes; lightened competition hammer springs in bolt-action rifles may cause misfires.
-
Premium Pricing: Costs more than standard non-match commercial small rifle primers.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: How do Federal GM205MAR primers differ from standard Federal 205 or 205M primers?
A: The GM205MAR uses a thicker, harder cup designed specifically to withstand floating firing pin contact in AR-15 rifles and resist piercing under high pressures, whereas 205 and 205M feature softer cups intended primarily for bolt-action rifles.
Q: Can I use Federal GM205MAR primers in bolt-action rifles?
A: Yes, as long as your bolt-action rifle has a standard firing pin spring weight capable of reliably detonating military-grade/hardened primer cups.
Q: Are Federal Gold Medal AR Match primers non-corrosive?
A: Yes. All Federal Gold Medal primers feature modern, non-corrosive, non-mercuric chemical formulations that keep your action, bore, and gas system clean.

Steffy Baby From Mountain West –
They all went bang. I bought 1000 and loaded about 600 for my AR, No problems. I loaded 200 in a .20 Practical, Rem and LC brass, no problems and occasional one hole 3 shot groups and 1.5 – 2 inch groups at 300 with CFE223 & IMR8208. 150 primers were loaded in a .204R. No problems with Winchester brass, great groups, same accuracy as .20P. When I tried to prime Hornady .204R cases I had problems seating the primers – I finally got 40 out of 50 cases primed with the Fed primers and finished the rest with CCI 41’s. 5 Stars because they worked extremely for my AR, .20P, and .204R with Win brass.
