Federal Premium Primers #209 Muzzleloading Box of 100
Clear Product Overview
Federal 209 Muzzleloading Primers are specifically engineered for inline black powder rifles, offering clean, consistent ignition without the heavy breech plug fouling typical of standard shotshell primers. Manufactured under Federal’s exacting quality standards, these specialized #209 primers feature a tailored charge strength designed to ignite black powder and modern synthetic substitutes like Pyrodex and Triple Seven. Standard shotshell primers can push loose powder or pellets forward before full ignition—creating a “crud ring” or causing vertical stringing—whereas Federal Muzzleloading 209 primers deliver an ideal thermal output to optimize accuracy and keep maintenance minimal.

Real-World Use Information
When you are gearing up for big-game muzzleloader season or tuning your inline rifle on the range, Federal 209 Muzzleloading Primers eliminate the frustrating ignition delays and sticky breech plugs associated with standard shotshell primers. Their precise flame output ignites loose or pelletized powders instantly without scorching the breech area, ensuring maximum velocity consistency. Furthermore, the flanged cup design inserts smoothly and removes easily from modern inline breech systems, making field reloading quick and hassle-free.
Compatibility & Requirements
-
Rifle Compatibility: Designed for all modern inline muzzleloaders equipped with a 209 primer breech plug (CVA, Thompson/Center, Traditions, Knight).
-
Powder Compatibility: Formulated for black powder, Pyrodex, Hodgdon Triple Seven, and other popular synthetic propellants.
-
Safety Requirement: Wear protective eyewear when loading, keep primers stored in a cool and dry location, and never use shotshell load data for muzzleloading components.
Pros & Limitations
Pros:
-
Reduces Crud Ring Formation: Formulated to minimize hard carbon buildup in front of the breech plug for easier seating between shots.
-
Instantaneous Ignition: Hot enough to ignite black powder substitutes reliably without pushing the charge unburned down the barrel.
-
Easy Breech Removal: Flanged design prevents sticking and mushrooming inside tight breech pockets.
-
Non-Corrosive Formula: Prevents corrosive pitting on steel breech plugs and barrel throats.
Limitations:
-
Not for Shotshell Reloading: Engineered solely for inline muzzleloading rifles; do not use in standard 12ga or 20ga shotshell ammunition loads.
-
100-Count Box Size: Comes packaged in convenient 100-count boxes rather than large 1,000-count cases typical of standard metallic primers.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Can I use standard shotshell 209 primers in my inline muzzleloader?
A: While standard 209 shotshell primers physically fit, they are designed with extra force that can dislodge the powder charge before full ignition, leading to “crud rings” and poor accuracy. Federal Muzzleloading 209 primers are specifically tuned to solve this issue.
Q: Do Federal 209 Muzzleloading Primers work with Triple Seven pellets?
A: Yes, they are an excellent choice for igniting Hodgdon Triple Seven pellets as well as loose black powder substitutes.
Q: Are these primers non-corrosive?
A: Yes, Federal 209 Muzzleloading Primers use a completely non-corrosive, non-mercuric priming compound to protect your rifle’s breech plug and bore.

Between the 777 and the Winchester 209 the Federal was the only 209’s that worked with my Black Horn powder without hang fires or failures. I highly recommend these Federal 209’s if you want to make sure you have great ignition. I used this only so far out of my CVA V2 Optima Pistol .50 cal. with the Black Horn Plug.
