Federal Premium Gold Medal Small Rifle Match Primers #205M Box of 1000
Clear Product Overview
Federal 205M Primers (Gold Medal Small Rifle Match) represent the peak of ignition uniformity for long-range target shooters, benchrest competitors, and precision handloaders. Manufactured under the strictest quality control standards in the industry, Federal Gold Medal primers feature exacting tolerances for anvil geometry, cup dimensions, and chemical compound weight. Because small variations in primer flame can cause velocity swings at extreme distance, the #205M is specifically engineered to minimize Standard Deviations (SD) and Extreme Spreads (ES). As a result, precision riflemen rely on them to eliminate fliers and hold tight vertical dispersion downrange.

Real-World Use Information
When you are handloading match-grade ammunition for Precision Rifle Series (PRS) events, F-Class competition, or long-range varmint hunting, Federal 205M Primers provide the predictable ignition needed for group-shooting performance. The uniform cup thickness seats consistently in small rifle primer pockets using hand-held priming tools or bench-mounted units. Furthermore, the specialized priming mix burns clean and generates a consistent flame path across diverse temperature ranges. Consequently, handloaders achieve match-winning consistency shot after shot.
Compatibility & Requirements
-
Cartridge Compatibility: Fits all small rifle primer pocket brass (.223 Rem, 6mm ARC, 6.5 Grendel, small pocket 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm BR).
-
Equipment Compatibility: Seats smoothly with all standard hand priming tools, bench tools, and progressive press priming assemblies (Dillon, Hornady, Lee, RCBS).
-
Safety Requirement: Wear safety glasses during handling, store in a cool, dry location away from heat sources, and never crush primers into dirty or tight pockets.
Pros & Limitations
Pros:
-
Match-Grade Consistency: Ultra-tight compound weight tolerances minimize velocity variations downrange.
-
Low SD & ES: Helps achieve single-digit standard deviations in well-tuned rifle loads.
-
Sensitive Ignition: Soft, high-purity brass cups yield crisp, instantaneous ignition.
-
Clean-Burning Compound: Keeps flash holes and primer pockets free of heavy carbon residue.
Limitations:
-
Softer Cup Profile: Precision match cups are slightly softer than heavy military primers (like CCI #41), so extra care should be taken to avoid slam-fires in loose floating firing pin autoloaders.
-
High Demand Availability: Benchrest quality tolerances mean production takes longer, making stock limited during peak shooting seasons.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: What is the difference between Federal #205 and Federal #205M primers?
A: Both primers use the same dimensions, but the “M” denotes Gold Medal Match grade. #205M primers are produced by Federal’s most experienced technicians using tighter tolerances and enhanced quality checks to ensure maximum ignition uniformity.
Q: Can I use Federal 205M primers in AR-15 rifles?
A: Yes, they function exceptionally well in AR-15 match rifles chambered in .223 Rem, 6mm ARC, or 6.5 Grendel. However, ensure primers are seated fully below flush to prevent slam-fires with free-floating firing pins.
Q: Are Federal 205M primers suitable for small primer pocket 6.5 Creedmoor brass?
A: Yes, they are a premier choice for handloaders running high-end small primer pocket 6.5 Creedmoor or 6mm Creedmoor brass for competition.

I used to load cci bench rest and while they worked fine I bought some on a whim, I noticed that in 500 rounds stretched through all three rifles no other variable has changed and my loads all went down 2+ Sd points. With these primers I get sub 5 sd’s across 10 to 15 rounds and have yet to have a bad primer, which I used to get at least 1/100 with cci. I’m sold as soon as there is a hazmat sale, I’ll buy 15,000 of them. they are smooth feeding in my hornady ap for 300aac too which is a plus to only have to buy one kind of primer across the board for all my rifles
